"When I wear a jacket, I never use the zip fastener because it looks trendier."

I don't know anyone who would call it a "zip fastener" in normal conversation.

In the UK we would call it a zip.
And I would have said, "I think it looks more trendy if I leave my jacket open".

Is "trendy" trendy these days? I think "cool" still works and I believe "sick" has some currency.
I would suspect the zip would not be mentioned.
