Bit of a specialist query, but any help you can give me would be welcome. I manage a team of IT Trainers, as part of a restructuring we are losing our title to become L&D Officers. I would like any ideas, opinions, evidence as to why this should not be the case. We are afraid we will lose our specialism once we lose our title. Any suggestions??

But as L&D officers, there is so much potential for carving your own niches. For instance, have you considered the following:

Law
Libel & Defamation; Litigation & Damages; Lies & Decisions; Lampooning & Derision?

Government
Liars & Despots; Launch & Destroy; Lions & Donkeys; Lies & Disinformation; Loss & Defeatism; Loss & Destruction; Lucifer & Dubya?

Personal development / Lifestyle
Leer & Drool; Lisp & Drawl; Lazy & Dozy; Languid & Dishevelled; Limp & Droopy; Lube & Dildo; Lag & Drag; Lard & Deposit; Legless & Dribbling?

Other
Lunatics & Dentists; Lifeblood & Dracula; Lance & Drain; Lift & Drop?

That about covers it.
Welcome ala
A rose by any other name....hey, if you are needed, who cares what they call you? If you are not special, you do not deserve to be specialists.
Make yourselves important.

Alabir, you do have one slight advantage over Tony and me, you know which country you are in. We are both from the UK, and obviously, otherwise we would have known what it meant, L&D is not used in the areas where we work.

The question is, does one change status with a change of title, or is it the perception that it does?

An Environmental Waste Operative is still a Dustman, and an Administration Officer is still a clerk. So does it work in the opposite direction? Would a Car park Cashier lose any status if the title were changed to Parking Attendant? Personally, I think not.

Presumably in your organisation you have L&D Officers who instruct on all sorts of topics, in all probability they are specialists is their own fields, is there any difference between a history teacher and a geography teacher, or are they both teachers?

Yes, a title is important because of the self-esteem involved, but if it only matters to the person holding it, it doesn’t matter to the rest of the world.

Discuss…

I think Ruth / Alabir should tell us what the title is that she fears losing. It may not be as good as the one she is about to get.

Inquiring minds want to know!

Personally they want to change me from an ICT Training Manager to a L&D Co-ordinator (ICT)- don't even get me started on that one!!! I am in London, UK and I work for Local Govt. Maybe L&D is the latest buzz work in the HR (human resources) field but we as IT Trainers have a profession and it's IT Training (http://www.iitt.org.uk). Like the idea of Liars & Despots; Lions & Donkeys; Lies & Disinformation; Loss & Defeatism; Loss & Destruction; wonder if I should mention these terms in my meeting on Monday?
Thanks everyone, you made me smile if nothing else.

OK I take your point, if you belong to an Institute, you should be allowed to use the title suggested by that institute.

Mind you, I wish you luck trying to argue that with a member of The Institute of Personnel Management who is now probably called Human Resources Czar or something similar.

I work in local government as well!

Sorry we only made you smile Ruth, we usually try for outright prolonged laughter.

ala: Welcome. Forgive me, however, an old fart on the brink of senility, for not understanding your thread, which upon first few readings seems to contain its own answer. However, the others are much smarter than I and should give you a variety of clever, entertaining, and sometimes even pertinent responses

I didn't realise there were people working in local government :)

If you "train" people you arn't a co-ordinator but a trainer, educator, skill enhancer. It does seem possible that you are trainer in a L&D department.

I was once an editor for a small newspaper. When the boss/publisher invited some potential investors to tour the facilities, he decided to spruce up the newsroom with name plates on our desks. There followed some discussion on what our titles would be as many of us had more than one job. The most difficult to describe was one woman who did typing, checking out equipment, coordinating with writers and salespeople, distributing mail, etc., etc. -- she was much more than a Girl Friday. The only way the boss ever described her was his "right arm."

She ended up with no title at all on her name plate!
