Post by Stevenloan » Tue Dec 09, 2014 5:43 pm

- Hi there all members! When you fail an exam of a subject or fail a class in high school or college, and then you have take that exam again. Are the sentences below good to say in this context?

A. John’s biggest goal for this year is not to owe any subject.
B. John’s biggest goal for this year is not to fail any class.
C. John’s greatest goal for this year is not to sit for any exam again.

Thanks a lot,

Hi Steven.

I'd use

John’s main aim this year is not to fail in any subject.

In the US, they may prefer

John’s main aim this year is not to fail any class.

Hi Steven,

I do not understand your sentence A at all. "Owe" does not have the meaning you want it to.

In your sentence C, it would be more normal to say "... not to sit any exam again. " (i.e. "sit an exam", not "sit for an exam". Otherwise, Edwin's suggestions are good.

Or C: "...not to [have to] resit any exam".
