hurt and kill

Post by Stevenloan » Wed Jan 30, 2013 10:08 am

Ellen: What a beautiful diamond necklace! Thank you! But how on earth did you get the money to pay for it?
Fred: What you don't know won't hurt you.

- Are "What you don't know won't hurt you" and "What you don't know won't kill you" interchangeable in this context?

Thanks a lot,

I would say not really. "What you don't know won't hurt you" is an idiom. I have never heard kill being used.

I agree, Bob - and so do

a couple of Google searches ( "What you don't know won't hurt you" v "What you don't know won't kill you") (about 16 : 1)

and

a Google Ngram (for know won't hurt, know won't kill) (I thought that would give the best correspondence to what we're actually looking for).

( http://books.google.com/ngrams/graph?co ... g=3&share= )

However, the results are pretty low in each case.

How's this for a handy little syllogism:

"What you don't know won't kill you"
"What doesn't kill you will make you stronger"

Therefore:

"What you don't know will make you stronger"

?

To add one of the many dissenting views on the claim from the original adage you quoted Erik: "What doesn't kill you will damage you mentally and momentarily" :) :)

So, Erik has proved that

Ignorance is Power.

It's not the conventional view.
