sarnie
Re: sarnie
Gosh is it ? That explains "Sarn Helen"... the name of a road in west Wales which I believe was built by the Romans.

Re: sarnie
Tony's idea about doorstep strikes me as the best shot yet at finding plausible derivation for sarnie. For yearsI have been dissatisfied with the ideas on this presented online. Born and raised in Yorkshire, when I left UK in the early 1960s (in my early thirties, having been a Fleet Street journalist) I had never heard the word; when I returned to visit family in the 1990s, sarnie was in everyday use The usual dictionary offerings ("derived from northern pronunciation of sandwich") strike me as weak. But doorstep, that's real; it rings a bell.
