Most-hated pet names for female partners revealed

From Yahoo Lifestyle [UK]:

'Babe', 'sweetcheeks' and 'snookums' have emerged as the most hated pet names for [Britain's] women, it has emerged.

The research into the most loved and hated terms of affection found 'Babe' to be the most loathed way to refer to a loved one.

'Muffin', 'pumpkin' and 'baby doll' are also likely to prompt a cold shoulder from your other half, according to the report.

By contrast terms like 'gorgeous', 'beautiful' and 'lovely' are still considered acceptable, according to a new survey by domain website siteopia.com

The Americanised terms of 'Baby Girl' and 'Baby Doll' don't seem to wash with Brits and make the most-hated list, but modern pet names like 'Babycakes' and 'Sexy Pants' will also backfire.

Just one in five Brits actually calls their partner by their full name most of the time, with the same number reserving a private nickname they use when it's just the two of them.

And the men studied admitted they refer to their partner with names they would only use while she was out of earshot.

'The Mrs' or 'The Wife' are common terms still used by men today, while a sixth of men quietly refer to their partner as 'The Boss'.

'Her indoors' is a popular name for an absent wife or girlfriend, while a braver one in 14 prefer to use 'The ball and chain'.

Three per cent of men polled admitted using the unflattering epithet 'The Wicked Witch of the West'.

A softer one in ten blokes admitted they let their partner call them a soppy nickname that they would dread their mates ever finding out.

But one in ten Brits has been found out on a private nickname - 44 per cent used it accidentally when others were around, while friends accidentally reading private texts or cards brought it out in the open for three in ten.

Do you agree with the full list?

----------------------------------------

I speculate that women whose partners habitually refer to them by one of the names in the first list are likely to reciprocate by calling their mate "You $@%#ing @$$%*&!!!" (Just guessing, of course...)

My parents always called each other 'Darling', even when they were having an argument. One way you could tell it was an argument was from the increased sharpness of tone of its delivery (my mother's technique), or the placement of the emphasis on the second syllable (my father's preferred method).

I can't say I'm that fond of being called 'Dear' -- especially when it is closely followed by 'headlights'.

Maybe they think their man enjoys poring over mo' lasses a little too much. Or possibly being sweet doesn't make up for being considered rather thick.

I notice that 'Muffin' occurs twice in the 'loathe' list (#6 & #11). Presumably the first occurrence represents Muffin-Top, and the second, Muffin-Bottom.

'Pickle' (#18) might get you into one.

In the very excellent Gavin and Stacey one of the characters calls his beloved "Sugartits". I always thought that it would be a bit dodgy starting to use that one.

That's presumably because Fido and Rover are usually reserved for non-human pets... ?

I call my dog most of the second list at times. Should I be alarmed? Should she?

.. love it ..

.. a new name that has come to my ears is Presh, short for "Precious", as used by Stella in the Welsh TV series .. I suppose it is a wider term of endearment as she uses it for all close family ..

Do you know for certain that it isn't an abbreviation of pressure sore?

It is not only Stella that uses Presh. I have to admit that you rarely hear it around these parts, but it is quite common in the part of Wales where Stella lives.

I have to say, I really enjoy it when a new person signs on and starts rooting around and pulling up old threads. Keep looking, Paul.

Note that he says women. So it must be a standard name that they are all required to adopt, whether or not they realise they are just one of many in his parade of conquests.
