Accounts of an early 20th-century pharmacist and historian in Gratiot County, a peaceful farm area in central Michigan, in which he writes:

"One time a jeweler had a big clock in his store window
and he noticed that a man came by every day and checked
his watch with the time on the clock. This went on for
quite some time until one day the jeweler became curious
and stopped the clock checking[sic] man, asking him why
he needed to know the right time daily. The man replied,
"I am the watchman down at the nearby factory and I blow
the whistle on certain hours, so I have to have the
absolutely correct time. Now I want to thank you for
having a clock to provide me with the correct time."
The jeweler replied, "You don't have to thank me; you
see, I just set the clock by the whistle."

.....In the drug store we are constantly asked to recommend
some remedy of some sort for an ailment, but some ailments
are beyone what we consider suitable for home treatment,
and so we recommend medical treatment. One doctor asked
a patient, "Did you go to another doctor before you came
to me?" The patient replied, "No, I went to the druggist."
"And what foolish advice did he give you?" the doctor asked.
"He told me to come and see you", the patient replied.

At one time we had a girl that was always late
in coming to work in the morning. We opened
the store at eight. One morning when she came
late, as usual, I told her that she should have
been here at eight; she said, "Why, what happened?"

Norma Curtis was with us for several years until
I sold the store. Norma was good at arranging the
stock. One morning she had just finished straightening
up the magazine rack, when a lady came in with a small
child that started throwing the magazines on the floor.
Norma came up and took a magazine from the child and put
it back on the rack. The mother said, "Come on, dear,
we don't seem to be welcome here." "You're darned tootin'
you're not", replied Norma.

A woman was sick in bed and asked her husband to make her a cup of tea. He came back from the kitchen and told her he couldn't find the tea. "It's right in plain sight," she told him, "in a coffee can marked matches."

While I was in Scotland there was a Britisher from southern England touring the Scottish Highlands; he had a minor collision with a local Scotsman. The Scot called the police and while they were waiting, the Scot brought out a bottle of whiskey and invited the visitor to have a drink. He was agreeable and after he had his drink, the Scot put the cap back on the bottle. "Aren't you going to have a drink, too?" the Englishman asked. "Oh, yes," replied the Scot, "but not until after the police come."
