The long and the short of the tall

We've created this area in the hope of seeing material ranging from some well-told (or well retold) jokes to original writing with a humorous slant, or anything else that might appeal to the kind of person who enjoys playing with words more than people. That probably means someone like yourself. N.B. -- Postings preceded by ** contain some sexual or risqué content. (Makes them easier to find.)

The long and the short of the tall

Four managers were in charge of their company's 50th anniversary celebrations. While planning the decorations, they decided they needed to measure the height of the flagpole at the entrance gate. So they loaded up the company golf cart with their equipment and rode out to the gatehouse. However, here they only succeeded in falling off their ladders, dropping their tape measures and completely getting in each other's way. In short, the exercise was a fiasco from start to finish.

Just at the moment that they were giving up the whole thing as a bad job, an engineer came along. When he realised what the managers had been trying to do, he pulled the flagpole out of the ground, laid it flat, measured it from end to end, gave the measurement to one of the group, and walked off.

After he had departed, one of the other managers turned to his colleagues and laughed sarcastically. "Isn't that just like an engineer –- we're looking for the height, and he gives us the length!"
