Coming home to roost

We've created this area in the hope of seeing material ranging from some well-told (or well retold) jokes to original writing with a humorous slant, or anything else that might appeal to the kind of person who enjoys playing with words more than people. That probably means someone like yourself. N.B. -- Postings preceded by ** contain some sexual or risqué content. (Makes them easier to find.)

Coming home to roost

The state elections were approaching. A chartered bus decorated with party slogans was filled with politicians en route to a public meeting. However, it was running behind schedule, and was travelling along a rural Arkansas road at some speed.

As bad luck would have it, the driver of the bus misjudged a curve, and the vehicle skidded off the road into a field and rolled over, coming to rest only after striking an ancient oak tree so hard that the welds of the cabin burst apart and the passengers were flung out into the field.

Hearing the sound of rending metal from his dwelling a couple of hundred feet from the scene, the old farmer who owned the field rushed out to investigate. Straightaway he could see that it had been a catastrophic accident. A few minutes later, he started his beat-up old tractor and began to excavate a hole some distance from the tree in order to bury the hapless passengers.

The next morning, the county sheriff was out in his patrol car searching for the bus after it had been reported missing. Finding its mangled remains with no-one inside, he pulled up at the dilapidated farmhouse and asked the old-timer what had happened to those on board.

The farmer explained that he had gone ahead and buried them.

In surprise the sheriff asked him, "Are you sure they were ALL dead?"

The farmer shrugged. "Well, some of them said they weren't, but you know how them politicians always lie."
