I had a friend from Germany just ask me where the word "puppy" comes from. Can you help?

Puppy is based in French 'poupée', a doll, and was first defined as a small dog used as a lady’s pet or plaything; a toy dog. The French itself is based on Latin 'pupa', a doll.
