In a moment of madness, I posted a rather poor pun on the "phonetics" thread in the other column. Suddenly it crosses my mind that it is a visual pun, not an acoustic one (phone tics). Is there a word for 'dis graceful habit I have? Or is it covered by the word "pun".

Phil;

In 99.99 percent of pun cases, they are jokes. How then could it be disgraceful? Occasionally, a pun turns out to be a "witty wisecrack," but still funny and considered a joke.

Rest easy, and kept punning along.

It could be described as punish, Phil. Which is what my wife says she will do to me if I don't improve.

Yes, Edwin, I can see that.
And Leighton's suggestion is a classic. I believe it even cropped up in the Grauniad years ago. Automatic hyphenation turned on and the wrong language set in a word processing programming is a rich seam of such gems. My favourite that got through to publication was "works-hop".

Always remember: A punster is the lowest form of humor being.
