Re: balkanization

A Canadian film "Ghosts of Medak Pocket" documents stories told by UN peace keeping forces from Canada about the Croat army operations against Serbs in Krajina in 1993. commanded by Gotovina, along with Rahim Ademi. It can be watched here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-AvcKJn ... ure=relmfu

Wonder that

In a question Steven asked recently I found the use of "that" in ""It remains doubtful that a merger will increase profitability in the medium term because of the high cost of redundancy packages" odd, expecting "whether" or "if" in its place. Google results show that this use of "that" is establish...

Re: balkanization

It is interesting to compare the findings of the court in the case against Gotovina and Markac and the insufficient evidence problem, with the same problem judges had in the case against Ganic accused of ordering the killings in Dobrovoljacka street in Sarajevo, which I wrote about here http://www.w...

Re: the death of the idiom

I've used CGEL for the Cambridge Grammar of the English Language, which is the newer one Tony. A Comprehensive Grammar of the English Language was long the only reference work in the field, aimed at the non-professional audience, but people took to writing on the subject quite a bit since. Interesti...

Re: balkanization

Kosor said, “there is no excuse for the crimes and therefore the Croatian government decisively rejects and condemns every attempt at historical revisionism and rehabilitation of the fascist ideology, every form of totalitarianism, extremism and radicalism,” and added, “Pavelić’s regime was a regim...

Re: the death of the idiom

You're welcome Edwin. The word immediately is yours here. Follow means come/go after, not necessarily immediately after. (Though the author could have pre-empted the possible misunderstanding.) True of course, the word "immediately" is mine, it is how I understood his intended meaning. Saying that n...

Re: balkanization

The harsh tone of Carla Del Ponte over the court's verdict came as a surprise to me. http://english.blic.rs/In-Focus//9224/Carla-Del-Ponte-This-is-not-justice-this-is-denial-of-a-huge-crime I respect that as a Hague's prosecutor she was prompt in condemning and prosecuting crimes on Kosovo and Srebr...

Re: Interpretation of peacemaker's words

I think that the tone of this article http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/1999/jun/06/balkans "Why Milosevic blinked first" nicely illustrates the rhetoric and the kind of democracy which is practiced nowadays. I was expecting any moment to read.."..and then poker-faced Maarti kicked the door of the sal...

Re: the death of the idiom

.. what about break wind ?? WoZ, the very meaning of the phrase break wind tells you it must be transitive :) The question on what constitutes a syntactic object and what not is a difficult and contentious one obviously. The point for me is that the attempt to formulate syntactic category of the ob...

Re: the death of the idiom

(1) I can't seem to find any reference to 'break jail', whether regarded as decomposable or unitary, in the dictionary you link to, the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary. Sorry about that Edwin, I gave the link as an illustration of a well-organized dictionary entry, I wasn't looking for "break ...

Re: the death of the idiom

I couldn't say with certainty whether a native speaker would ever think of "break" as "escape" in any other context other than "break jail" but if not, I would agree with Edwin that adding a sub-entry for the verb "break" alone to explain the meaning synonymous to "escape" doesn't make much sense. A...

Re: Seeking a word: Known someone longer than you haven't?

I advise people not to bother with thinking of such phrase on anniversaries, just don't count the time before. You can say : My life started when I met you dear, I wasn't alive before then.

Re: Interpretation of peacemaker's words

Writing about people in peacemaking business on another topic, I touched upon one of them, Marti Ahtisari, here receiving a Nobel prize for Peace http://wn.com/martti_ahtisaari,_receiving_his_nobel_prize!!, and gets a round of applause for his achievements in this business branch. I've come across a...
