Career advice

I'm thinking of taking a quickie course in proof reading. I did one of those (course at the uni, Finnish not English), and found it very useful - it was fun, and my own intuition on language developed a great deal. If you do plan a career dealing with languages - not necessarily proofreading, than ...

Testing

I would like to test something that is probably an urban legend here in Finland: Open your Word, and write to a blank document the following: =rand (200,99) then, press Enter. I can assure you, that this does not mess up your computer or anything, it gives a rather peculiar result in Finnish Word, a...

I haven't been here for a while, so I'm truly sorry I could not answer to your question immediately. The questionnaire was taken off the Internet due to copyright related reasons - I promised the translator not to keep it published after one month. The comments are available in the address Bob kindl...

Language engineering

The modern official Norwegian languages (both of them) and the Finnish language are all the results of almost superhuman efforts of language planners to unite countries around their languages. I did not quite catch this point, but if you mean the references to Finnish-Swedish minorities (living in ...

From the world of machine translation

Machine translation is rarely working properly simply because machines cannot consider the sentence as a whole, but translate only one word at a time. One of the most confusing sites I have found was the site of hotel us (http://www.hotelus.com) that has a Finnish version of the page. The so called ...

I was only being a smarta** ;)

It's good to know that GAL is becoming correct again. My teacher told me about the un-PC nature of the word during one translation class and I have avoided the word in official texts afterwords. I simply couldn't help myself this time... Thanks for the info on GUY(S)!

YES! This is the right answer. TIP: If you want to tell this the hard way, add as many unnecessary details as possible...
