Re: Cable TV

Can't afford cable. Haven't watched tv in years. Mostly we watch dvds - our own or from the library. When I lived in the States my wife and I decided to cut the cord to cable TV because of the expense. Instead we subscribed to Netflix, Amazon Prime (which also offers lots of streaming content) and ...

Re: Spooky pond

To answer this question, it would be useful to know where this pool is and hence how it came into being.

Re: School Teacher

The proper focus of child-rearing ought to be the well-being of the child in terms of its psychological and emotional development. Beating it up only traumatizes and brutalizes it. It also encourages it to behave the same way to those who are younger and smaller than they are. I think those who clai...

Re: Get off at

"To get off with someone" (in British English, anyway, and evidently also Australian English) means "to embark on a romantic relationship with someone" which might or might not involve having sex with them. When I was at school the students might get off with each other, but quite often (in the youn...

Re: School Teacher

From next year it will be illegal in Wales for anyone, including parents, to smack children. Quite right too! My parents smacked me and my brothers, and the effect was not to improve our behaviour — rather, it encouraged us to hide whatever questionable activities we got up to more effectively. It ...

Re: Power outage

In January 2005, an ice storm hit the Kansas city my then-wife and I were living in. After about a day the freezing rain stopped, and the wind picked up. Wind-stirred tree branches heavily coated with ice broke off and fell on the power cables that supplied our side of the street. This in turn cause...

Re: there weren't any?

The normal formulations would be "There was/were no..." and (as you hinted at, Navi) "There was/weren't any..."

Your versions with "not" sound decidedly odd.

Not again

During a funeral, the pallbearers accidentally bump into a wall and hear a faint moan from the casket. They open it and discover that the man they are carrying is still alive. The man lives for a further decade and dies. A second funeral is held. At the end of the service, the pallbearers prepare to...

The no-shows

A seven-year-old girl was usually driven to school every day by her grandpa, but when he had a bad cold one morning Granny drove her there instead. That evening the girl told her parents that the rides to and from school had been very different with Granny. "In what way?" asked her parents. "Well", ...

"...too lazy to..."

In my opinion, pomegranates aren't worth the effort. Much better just to buy pomegranate juice.

The bottom of the barrel

A bloke in the pub told me he once had to scrape ice off his windscreen but couldn't find his scraper. So he decided to use his store discount card instead. Unfortunately he could only get 15% off.

For "entertain", you could substitute “accommodate" or "make room for".

The "as good (big, rich, stupid...) of a" construction is thoroughly established in American English, but as others have commented, not so much here in the UK.

Re: Coming a long way off

It's actually two separate but adjacent phrases: ”be seen coming", meaning approximately ”be noticed approaching", and "a long way off”, meaning "at/from a considerable distance [from the observer's location]". Personally I much prefer wearing shorts to long trousers except when the weather is very ...
